New rooftop solar installations advance Komar toward 2030 energy goals

Through its Sri-Lanka-based manufacturing arm, Star, Komar continues to raise the bar in sustainable apparel production with the completion of two large-scale rooftop solar installations in 2024.

In July, Star’s Kaduwela facility added a 600 kw rooftop solar system, now generating an average of 39,500 kWh per month and supplying 30% of the site’s total electricity needs. On December 31, Star’s washing facility in Katunayake completed a second installation with a capacity of 1,400 kw, producing 168,000 kWh monthly and meeting 75% of the facility’s total electricity demand.

Star’s solar installations are driving Komar closer to its goal of sourcing 80% of electricity from renewable sources at its sites by 2030

With a total solar capacity of 4.9 MW across its operations, Star’s renewable energy investments are making a measurable impact—cutting greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing overall energy efficiency. These advancements reflect Komar’s leadership in sustainability and its progress toward its 2030 renewable electricity targets and SBTi-aligned carbon reduction goals.

In addition to its newest solar energy projects, Star is already home to the first Passive House in Southeast Asia and is Sri Lanka’s first and largest group of apparel manufacturing facilities to be certified as carbon neutral—helping Komar pave the way for new standards in sustainable operations, from energy and water conservation to greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
